What Is Shiatsu Massage?

Pressure, along the body’s pathways.

Shiatsu is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, which holds that the body has pathways, or meridians, through which energy, or “qi”, flows. When these pathways become blocked, it can lead to pain, discomfort and illness.

Our therapists use their fingers, thumbs and palms to apply pressure to specific points along these meridians. It’s a direct technique that meets the musculoskeletal and fascial body through palpation, stretching and acupressure combinations, nurturing the nervous system and leaving you feeling anchored and connected.

This holistic approach helps to balance body, mind and spirit.

Benefits Of Shiatsu

Relief for body and mind.

Shiatsu can relieve pain and tension, improve circulation, reduce muscle soreness and increase flexibility, while promoting relaxation and reducing stress. By increasing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and tissues, it can also support the body’s natural healing and speed recovery from injury.

What A Session Involves

A treatment that meets you where you are.

Your therapist begins with a brief consultation about your health history and any areas of concern, used to tailor the massage to you. The treatment is conducted fully clothed, on a traditional futon in our Japanese-inspired Movement room.

Using fingers, palms, bodyweight and sometimes elbows, your therapist applies pressure to specific points, alongside rocking, kneading, tapping and stretches to work the muscles and soft tissue and increase flexibility and range of motion. Many clients feel a sense of warmth and release of tension as different areas are worked; it’s important to let your therapist know if the pressure feels too light or too deep.

Afterwards, you may feel a wave of relaxation and a real decrease in pain and tension. Drink water and rest for a little while, so the body can keep releasing.

Good To Know

Shiatsu is performed fully clothed on a futon, so wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows for movement to get the most out of your experience.
