Yoga in Practice – Transform Your Spine

Amy takes you through the benefits of a yoga practice for the health of your spine. Learn how to work with the movements of your spine to lengthen and strengthen your backbone.

Remember: your spine can move forward, backward, side to side and twists left to right. It is beneficial to take all these movements each day for healthy spinal movement.

Food for thought…

  • Set a body movement reminder every hour! Gentle side bends, seated twists, forward folds and backward bends keep the energy through your spine moving with ease throughout the day. This supports healthy digestion, mental focus, and of course reduces daily tension.
  • Spinal movement feels most supported from strength and flexibility. What you learn in class is an opportunity to transform how you hold yourself throughout the day. Most of us need to find a balance between strengthening the glutes, core and upper back; with release through the hip flexors, lower back and chest.
  • Take your practice off the mat. Throughout the day check in with how your spine is feeling, it is usually a good indication of how much tension or ease you have in your physical body. Are you supporting a long spine with correct posture? Could you lightly engage your core, side waist and upper back muscles to support the strength of your spine?
