Meditations to Reduce Stress

“Meditation is not a way of making your mind quiet. It is a way of entering into the quiet that is already there.” ~ Deepak Chopra.

Try these simple meditation techniques to help settle a busy mind.

Manta Meditation

What is it? Mantra means a tool of thought, and is often a phrase repeated over and over again to create a point of expanded focus for the mind. Different vibrations and frequencies of sound effect the modulations of the brain waves.

Vocally, the mantra has slightly more resonance, but you will still feel the effects if you do this as a silent practice.

Here are some to get you started, chant what you feel comfortable, or make up your own.

So Hum ~ I am that, that I am.
Aham Prema ~ I am divine love.
Purnam Adah ~ All is perfect, all is well.
Shanti ~ Peace.

  1. Find a comfortable seated position, standing, or lying down.
  2. Choose a mantra that feels good for you, begin to repeat the mantra out loud.
  3. Slowly turn down the volume of the mantra, until it’s barely playing in your mind.
  4. Simply be with the experience of meditation, allowing your mind to wander, and snippets of silence to be felt. If you find yourself wanting to come out of the cycle of meditation, simply take your attention back to the mantra.
  5. Expand your awareness to your breath, to your mantra and the sound vibration through the body. Extend it into the room and all around you.
  6. When you’re ready to come out, release the mantra, open your eyes. Feel your feet back on the ground.

Sensory Awareness

Benefits of Sensory Awareness. When we train the mind to be more aware, we discover that there is so much more to be aware of. Typically, the human mind becomes a little lazy, habituated and even unimpressed with the array of wonders available to our senses on a daily basis.

Spend 5mins a day exploring the wonderful world of your senses, let your mind wander and your body relax. This has positive benefits and is known to reduce stress on the nervous system.
